More metrics rarely create more clarity. A useful operating metric has three qualities: the team can influence it, a meaningful change can be explained, and the explanation leads to a decision.
The five worth discussing
- Time to first value
- Activation by acquisition source
- Expansion-ready accounts
- Qualified pipeline velocity
- Retained revenue by cohort
None is universally correct. The point is to choose signals that connect behavior to an action your team can take this week.
What to move out of the room
Vanity totals, cumulative charts, and metrics with no clear owner can still be useful context. Put them in a reference dashboard. Do not let them consume the decision agenda.
End every review with an owner, a move, and a date. If a metric never changes a decision, it does not deserve recurring meeting time.
